Once known as Portus Cale, it was Porto that gave Portugal its name!
The second most populous city in the country, it is world-renowned for its wine, its bridges, the contemporary and ancient architecture, the historic centre listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Porto-style tripe and much more… Among the streets and alleys, there is much to discover in the city of Porto. The old and the new blend together beautifully. It is an enchanting city to discover while strolling…
Afternoon: Free Discovery of Oporto
You will pass through the historic centre of Porto, where you will be able to better understand the development of the city and the important role it has played over the centuries in the history of the country. You will pass by key points in the centre of Porto, such as S. Bento Station, the Carmelite Church, the Jewish Quarter, the Cathedral Quarter, the Belvederes and many others… You will discover a rich architecture in baroque, “salazarian”, neoclassical and other styles… Do not miss the magnificent and unmissable Stock Exchange Palace to understand the important role of the city in international trade.
Night: Fado dinner.
They say that Fado cannot be explained… it comes from within the Portuguese soul! The decoration is simple… a shawl, a guitar, a very singular voice, and an avalanche of feelings… This is what Fado is. It dates back to the middle of the 19th century, and at the time it was based on the transgression of the environments frequented by those who lived on the fringes of society. The most famous narrative in the history of Fado is based on the relationship between the count of Vimioso and Maria Severa Onofriana (1820-1846) a famous singer of the time.
Morning: Private and guided tour of the Oporto Backstage
You will discover the backstage of Porto where you will find the life of Porto’s inhabitants, the one that does not appear in tourist guides. You will get to know a more typical, more traditional Porto. The tour begins with an explanation and visit to places that show the development of the city outside the historic centre. The guide will try to highlight the effects of the economic development of the second half of the 19th century, but also the reversal of the medal, witnessed by neighbourhoods that are unique in Portugal. It will also pass through the old shops, neighbourhoods far from the city, yet very much connected.
Afternoon: 3 p.m. Private experience of visiting a Port wine cellar
Visit to a family winery established at the end of the 19th century with tasting of Port wines. Douro and Port wines are produced in the Douro Valley and aged in oak barrels in the cellars in Gaia. The passionate producer will explain to you in a playful and particularly engaging way the birth of Port Wine throughout the history of Portugal, and then you will taste the best wines of his production!
