The Alentejo region is known for its vast, endless plains on the inland side, its sublime beaches with crystal-clear waters, and imposing craggy cliffs on the Atlantic. The Alentejo is synonymous with absolute tranquillity but also with suffocating summer heat, particularly inland.

Beyond its contrasting and captivating landscapes, the Alentejo is also a region rich in history and tradition. In other words, it boasts majestic monuments, spectacular castles, royal palaces, fascinating historic villages, and strong gastronomic and cultural traditions.

Why visit the Alentejo Region in Portugal?

Living in the Alentejo means recharging your batteries in a haven of peace. It’s about taking the time to live away from the crowds in a fantastic natural and historical setting! It was in the Alentejo that, for centuries, the kings of Portugal spent the most time after Lisbon (see the Palace of Evora and the Palace of the Dukes of Vila Viçosa).

There are some incredible remains of the Roman and the Arab occupation (over 500 years) of the inland area. Moreover, these two cultures are clearly visible and identifiable, both in the architecture and in the local gastronomy. Historic towns such as Evora and medieval fortress towns (Marvão, Alqueva, Mértola, Elvas, Monzaras, Estremoz) take us back to the territorial defense era.

In addition, the region is renowned for producing classified wines (Alentejo wines), cork oak, olive trees, and traditional carpet weaving (Arraiolos), among other traditions.

The region boasts a high level of biodiversity. Above all, it has several protected natural parks that are among the best preserved in Europe. These include the Sado Estuary, south-western Alentejo and the Vicentine coast, the Guadiana Valley, and São Mamede Park.
